The Tiger Symbol in Shotokan Karate
It represented the strength, power and tenacity developed by training in Funakoshi Sensei’s karate, and also the traditional Chinese attitude that the tiger never sleeps but maintains a constantly keen alertness. It may be conjecture but the tiger being drawn inside the circle shows that its power, like the power of Shotokan karate, is contained and should never be used indiscriminately . . . only when absolutely necessary.
Shotokan Karate is a form of unarmed combat employing a wide range of punching and kicking techniques. There are no weapons involved in practicing karate and the term 'karate' literally means 'empty hand'; (Kara 'empty', Te 'hand'). Only the hands and feet are used for blocking and striking.
In 1922, Master Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan Karate, introduced Karate to mainland Japan during the first National Athletic Exhibition held in Tokyo. The demonstration turned out to be a great success due to the inspiring personality of Master Funakoshi. He taught only one method, a total discipline, which represented a mixture of Okinawan styles.
